#24 Alabama Travels to Georgia

Tonight #24 Alabama travels to Georgia to continue SEC play. Alabama is coming off a huge week where they beat top ten Auburn and blew out LSU. Georgia is coming off a week where they also beat LSU, and lost a tough overtime game to Florida. Here’s a preview of tonight’s matchup between these two 14-6 teams.

#24 Alabama

Alabama comes into tonight’s game having made their way back into the top #25. And while these two teams do have the same overall record, Alabama currently is the only team in the SEC with only one conference loss. Alabama is also coming off scoring 109 points in regulation against LSU, but they also allowed 88 points. Mark Sears has bumped his points per game total up to an even 20 points per game. However that number no longer leads the SEC as Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht has gone up to 20.1 ppg. Along with Sears Alabama has 3 other players averaging double digit ppg with Estrada, Nelson, and Griffen averaging over 10 ppg. And as we all know Alabama is still relying heavily on making 3s, but it is going well right now. They are currently 4th in the country with 11.4 made a game while shooting 38.9%.

Georgia

Georgia enters tonight’s game with a 4-3 record in SEC play. And like Alabama they have been very good at home this year with an 11-1 mark. Georgia is scoring a respectable 77.3 ppg, which is interesting because their highest scorer, Jabri Abdur-Rahim, is only averaging 13.4 ppg. This Georgia team does things more by committee with 3 players averaging over 11 ppg and 4 players over 7 ppg. They have also been a little better than Alabama defensively only giving up 73.2 ppg on the year. However, Georgia has lost 3 of their last 5, and in those games they allowed 85, 105, and 102. They will be looking for the home advantage to come through tonight to slow down this Alabama offense.

The Game

Alabama leads the all time series against Georgia 99-53, so tonight they will be looking for that 100th win. Alabama is also 6-4 in the last 10 games, the most recent being an absolute ass kicking that Alabama won 108-59. I also think it is worth noting that Alabama football did recently beat Georgia in the SEC Championship which knocked them out of the playoff. Those types of losses and hatred can carry across sports in this conference.

I would expect Georgia players, and fans, to very amped up for this game. Alabama is favored at -6 and the total is set at 166. I do think Alabama will win this game, and if they win I would expect it to be by more than 6 points. Of their 14 wins this year only two have been by less than 6 points. I was right on the total for the Alabama/LSU game, just saying. Georgia does need this game more though, the current projections do not have Georgia making the tournament.
